For July’s Maker of the Month, we have chosen Shauna Steele, Owner and Creator of Wild Loom Designs! As a celebration for her big win, we had a mini interview with Shauna so other makers can learn a little about her and Wild Loom Designs.
Read more of the interview below:
1. Introduce yourself and what you do.
Hi there! My name is Shauna and I live in Denver, Colorado with my fiance and puppy. I’m a fiber artist and I run an Etsy shop called Wild Loom Designs.
2. How did you get started?
The path to finding my style felt like a long one. I was always a creative individual and was very sensitive to the colors and patterns around me, but the problem was that I didn’t know how to express it. I tried all different sorts of outlets, but nothing seemed to stick. It wasn’t until college, when I was studying Fashion + Textiles, that I started to pay attention to fabrics and how they interacted. I fell in love with all the different textures and colors. That was when I started making a few wall hangings here and there for friends + family. I was told many times I should start an Etsy shop but fear always got in the way. In April of 2017, I was working from home and needed to find something for my hands to do. I needed to create! So I jumped online and completely self-taught myself embroidery, then I moved on to weaving, and now I’m dabbling in rug hooking. I’m constantly looking for the next skill to learn, and I think that’s how I know I’ve found my calling with fiber arts.
3. Who and what inspires you right now?
Nature has always been a huge inspiration in my life, for practically everything! It’s as simple as watching the sunrise and I start dreaming up a color palette for my next design. I believe it’s the most honest + pure source that I can relate to, which is why most of my designs tend to have more earthy tones. Living in Colorado, I’m outside a lot so I’m always making notes + collecting treasures for future designs.
4. What was a challenging aspect to getting started?
The most challenging thing was definitely self-doubt. I asked myself those typical questions like “what if I’m not good enough” and “what if no one buys anything”. I’ve learned that there will ALWAYS be a reason not to do something, so go for it. Another challenge I faced was comparing myself to other artists. Just don’t do it. Everyone is on their own journey and it’s important to remember that no one can create what you can create. Stay true to yourself and people will notice.
5. Where can others find your work?
You can find my work at wildloomdesigns.etsy.com & you can check out my creative process at @wildloomdesigns on Instagram, Facebook + Pinterest!
We certainly agree with you Shauna! There will ALWAYS be a reason not to do something, but you shouldn’t be stopped by any roadblock! Just go ahead and do it anyway! What’s the worst that could happen right?
